Just for Girls Elementary (JFGE) provides an innovative education to meet specific needs of girls in grades K-5 with an emphasis on Responsive Classroom as well as Reading, Language Arts, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) supported by emotional & character development. Just For Girls Elementary is connected to Manatee County Girls Club d/b/a Just for Girls as a part of the Just for Girls Elementary Education Program. JFG provides educational, developmental, and prevention-based programming to disadvantaged and impoverished girls during the dangerous and often unsupervised pre-and-post-school hours. JFGE is housed at Just for Girls east Bradenton center in Manatee County. Just for Girls keeps our children safe, promotes living drug-free, and motivates girls to succeed. JFG offers before school, after school, and alternative education opportunities. VISION: A community where today’s young girls grow up feeling safe, capable, and smart, having developed respect for themselves and others, with courage and confidence to be healthy and to achieve their full potential academically. Reaching one girl at a time, we will break the cycle of poverty and strengthen our families, neighborhoods, schools, and community. Below are photos for the following events:
JFGE grades K thru 5 went to Hunsader Farm on March 21st. A hayride enabled the girls to see the tomato fields up close & learn how vegetables of all kinds are planted & harvested. We also saw animals, ponds, farm equipment & even a covered wagon! They fed horses & other animals including a camel! Each girl received their own tomato plant from the farm to take home which ties in perfectly with the gardening skills they have learned this year. Great day!
May 3 was Field Day & “Craft Day“ at JFGE. The crafts were actually STEM centers where the girls learned science while having some fun.
May 14 was a great trip to Mote Marine for JFGE grades K-1-2 & 5th. Sharks, big squid & the petting areas were some favorites. Our guides made the classroom time so fun & we learned so much, even the adults. Another great trip to Mote.
The JFGE school garden has taken years to put in place but thanks to our partnership with FSU/Manatee County Ext. Services, it’s been one of the best projects we have ever done. The girls are so engaged & have learned so much, not only about gardening but about teamwork & responsibilities. Below is s graph prepared by FSU showing the results. What a win!
Holiday Shop 2019
Outreach Gift of Giving shop was a joyous event! Volunteers set up on Dec 12th and the shop was Dec 13th where volunteers showed by example and mentoring one-to-one the Gift of Giving.
On May 20th, 2019, Kris Higgerson, Outreach Chair, and Donna Katos, Outreach Committee member, delivered a $1,000 donation to the Food Bank of Manatee which is being matched 100% as part of the Summer Hunger Bags program. Each bag contains 6 meals and 3 snacks for $5. Their goal is to provide 20,000 bags. Our donation and match will provide 400 bags to local children in Manatee County.
In connection with the school garden program sponsored by UPWC, FSU Extension Services are providing classroom instruction on nutrition at JFGE.
Outreach enjoyed it’s 6th annual JFGE 3rd grade luncheon at UPCC on March 13 culminating the manners & etiquette classes taught by Mary Bennett. In tradition, we met the bus on arrival & took our stroll to view the flowers, water & animals (this being the 1st time many of the girls have ever been on a “bridge”). Chef prepared salad using lettuce & tomatoes from the school garden!! How cool is that! Earth to market is what we’re showing the girls. The girls sang a lovely song for us & then Mary presented each girl with a Certificate & rose. Many thanks to John Neal who attended & sponsored the meals for the girls & staff. UPWC provided transportation for JFGE. A great day!!
On Friday, March 1, Outreach participated in the National Education Association Read Across America at JFGE with grades K-5 in celebrating the 115th Birthday of Dr. Seuss. Our members were readers and each girl received 3 books, most purchased at the Scholastic Book Fair, & Dr. Seuss themed school supplies. Pictured below are Vicki DiPaolo, Jennifer Bauer, Donna Katos, Beckie Suverkrup (our very own Cat in the Hat), Elaine Kulbako and Kris Higgerson. Also reading were Jane Paschke, Ginny Miceli and Kay Winsauer.
JFGE Book Fair was held January 22-24. Scholastic provided a wonderful variety of books and again extended us a BOGO. UPWC provided Book Bucks for the girls to shop as well as fun drawings for "prizes" and lots of giveaways. Thanks to all members who assisted in making this another successful event for the girls!
