December Luncheon - Laurel Oaks Country Club
The UPWC held its holiday luncheon on December 12th at Laurel Oaks Country Club. Dolly Jacobs, circus aerialist and co-founder of the Circus Arts Conservatory, was the guest speaker. Jacob’s love and passion for the circus was obvious as she recounted her childhood as the daughter of a New York fashion model and famed Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus clown, Lou Jacobs. Jacobs showed a video of her performing in the 90’s and awed the audience with her ability to make it look so easy and effortless. While suffering a few mishaps over the years, nothing interfered with her performing until two recent hip replacements. In order to give back to the community, in 1997 Jacobs and her husband, Pedro Reis, co-founded Circus Sarasota. Known today as the Circus Arts Conservatory, the nonprofit organization helps keep alive the love of the Circus to the next generation. Part of the Conservatory’s outreach is to schools, nursing homes and hospitals where humor therapy is used to brighten the day. In 1998 Jacobs was inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame. In 1999 she received the "Circus Celebrity" award from the Ringling Museum and in 2013 she was inducted into The Gallery of Acrobatic Legends for her acrobatic feats.
