GARDENERS
Chair:Polly Curran

Save Our Seabirds (S.O.S.) mission is to work with injured or disabled seabirds to rectify their misadventures with mankind.

Lee Fox founded Save Our Seabirds back in 1990.   The facility, now located at the former Pelican Man facility on Ken Thompson Pkwy., has been awarded permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lee  continues to guide efforts to rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of native and migratory birds each year.  Whether from oil spills, fishing line entanglement, or the consequences of feeding of these wading and migratory birds, education and outreach are the keys to save these beautiful seabirds.

On Thursday, September 2nd the Garden Group will have a special guided tour of the facility to see firsthand how these birds are rehabilitated and also how this facility is aiding in the cleanup of the enormous tragedy of the Gulf oil-spill.  Our tour will begin at 10:30; please meet in the Club car park for carpooling about 9:45.  Following the one-hour tour we will have lunch at The Salty Dog, a rustic old Florida landmark across the street.  Please RSVP to Lorraine MacDonald.  There is a ‘wish list’ of common household laundry items on their website www.saveourseabirds.org that are constantly needed.  Please consider donating some of these items; we will collect them when we meet and present these during our visit.  There is no fee for this tour; however, you will find donation boxes throughout the facility if you wish to support.

A Garden Group note – Our interests go well beyond the backyard garden to include education and conservation of our beautiful preserves, parks, estuaries, coastline, rivers, the Florida native habitat and sharing our space with the vegetation and wildlife around us.  All members of UPWC are welcome to participate in any of our programs.  If you wish more information please contact Polly Curran.
